October 2009

The Hindalco Hirakud Power Plant has been conferred global recognition by prestigious US magazine POWER as it listed it as one of the ‘Top six coal-based power plants’ worldwide. A complete feature story was carried out on the plant in its October 2009 issue along with the accolade. Click here to view the full report on www.powermag.com

The POWER magazine, which is being published for over 127 years, is considered a definitive source of information in the global power generation industry.  Every year, it recognises outstanding performers in the power generating industry and honours them with awards in the categories viz., "Power Plant of the Year",”Marmaduke Award" and "Top Plants Award".

Hirakud Power Plant’s assessment was carried out by the magazine’s editorial team
based on certain competitive criteria. According to the parameters the magazine had set for the awards, top plants are those projects that have distinguished themselves as industry leaders for their best-in-class operating records, environmental performance, unique technology, and/or importance to their local community.

The POWER magazine has praised the plant for engineering “technical fixes to its original boiler designs to improve plant reliability and reduce outages and boiler repair costs.” It adds, “It also has made strategic investments in upgraded machinery to reduce auxiliary power consumption.”

Hirakud Power Plant has the distinction of being Asia’s first ISO-14001 (BS 7750)-certified captive-power-plant. The plant caters to the entire electricity needs of Hindalco’s aluminium-smelter operations that are located in the same region.

Another achievement of the plant was its ability to recycle 40 per cent of the ash generated by it in 2008 and reuse the same productively in various construction activities.

Currently, the plant has a generating capacity of 367.5 MW, as compared to only 67.5 MW in 2004.

The Hirakud Power team stands tall and proud to be counted among the world’s premier league of coal-based power plants!
